Battersea Power Station - Powering on stronger than ever

At least 20% of all London’s electricity needs were supplied by Battersea Power Station which went on to become a 509-megawatt generator and the third largest in all the UK. It has long been a beacon of the London’s skyline since its inception and an icon of industrial heritage. And now, this iconic landmark is in process of being transformed, redesigned and redeveloped into one of its own kind of development – to offer exceptional homes, business centres, community clubs, and corporate office spaces.

Who would’ve expected that the 42-acre site, which cost its developers £8 billion to build, would house 3,992 apartments, studio flats, a penthouse is expected to cost £30m, more than 200 shops and restaurants, recreational facilities including a 6-acre Riverside park? It means the residents will be able to get hands on a number of other leisure facilities too. Upon completion, it will not just be an ordinary community but a complete lifestyle project.

Best known for its four chimneys and art deco design, the iconic Grade II Battersea Power Station has stood derelict on the south bank of the River Thames since its decommission in 1983. To say the building has undergone a massive transformation is an understatement, and after 35 years, its unique historical features will serve a mixed-use hub. Thanks to architect Rafael Viñoly and the Battersea Power Station Development Company the two have come up with an extensive multi-phase master plan that will do more to bring the iconic structure back into London’s fabric.

Battersea Power Station – Present

When it was thought to transform the obsolete Battersea Power Station and the surrounding area into a unique and modern community, new buildings had been proposed in the surrounding area. Phase 1 of Battersea Power Station has been completed and handed over to the owners, the first residents have started to move in and new parkland has made the riverside accessible to the general public.

The power station is redesigned to house myriad of shopping and leisure facilities and it will also boast a new tube station. All the four chimneys have been replaced with the exact replicas of the original and a glass lift has been installed there to take interested people to a viewing platform at the top of one of the chimneys – to look across the London city.

Not just the residents are moving in to the high-rise ultra luxury apartments but the businesses has also planned to move into the new commercial units and office spaces such as Apple has chosen Battersea Power Station to open their new UK headquarters.

Battersea Power Station – Future

Battersea Power Station is in ongoing process of regeneration – as with more and more numbers of elite people moving in the already completed phase and the shops and businesses opening in this rejuvenated area will become London’s great riverside destinations.

Battersea Power Station is not just another development in London, but it is going to be an address where people would want to stay, spend their spare time, socialise and love to raise families. Public spaces are designed in a way that will boost social interaction and a real communal feeling amongst residents and visitors alike.

New transport links for SW8 and SW11, with new Underground stations will be opened at Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms by 2020 – offering faster and direct travelling to and from the area. Certainly, this is not the end to regeneration as with time, we will see more and advanced kind of development in the said area.

The development of Battersea Power Station is arguably one of the largest if not spectacular projects in the UK and it has been exciting for many Londoners to see the vast transformation of the surrounding landscape. The construction of more than 300 new residential homes, 500 affordable homes, construction of a new tube station, 2.5 million square feet of office and retail space, a library, a medical centre, childcare facilities, including the restoration of the power station is expected to continue until 2025.
