Dubai Metro celebrates 9th anniversary as new plans for expansion are announced

On a historic day for the people of Dubai, on September 9, 2009, the Dubai Metro was first introduced to the public. This new major transport introduction was destined to completely change the lives of over a million people in the UAE.

A few days ago, during the same month of September, the Dubai government celebrated the 9th anniversary of the Dubai Metro, a project that has surpassed expectations in terms of safety, cleanliness and affordability.

Up to now, Dubai Metro consists of 49 stations: 29 on the Red Line and 20 on the Green Line. The latest data from Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) show that in 2018, the Dubai Metro Red and Green Lines have transported 103.3 million passengers, compared to 100.6 million commuters during the same period in 2017. This comes as no surprise, as the metro is preferred daily by locals and visitors who seek fast journeys and reliable connections to their destination.

The future looks bright for the Dubai Metro, as RTA plans to expand the Dubai Metro to 110 km by 2020 and 421km by 2030. In a symbolic move that carries significant importance, the Route 2020 is nearing completion, as the road to connect Expo 2020 with the rest of Dubai. Besides creating fast links and increasing road capacity for this monumental event, areas such as Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estates and Dubai Investment Park, The Gardens, as well as Al Maktoum International Airport in the future, will benefit immensely from Route 2020. Riders on the Route 2020 are expected to reach 125,000 per day and 275,000 by 2030. With hundreds of growing communities around Dubai, that expand the ‘borders’ of the city centre, new modes of transport will be highly beneficial.

Dubai leadership has set in motion an ambitious plan where 50 trains will be procured at a cost of Dh10.6 billion that is set for a trial run in the last quarter of 2019. This is scheduled for May 20th, 2020, offering a five-month head start until Expo 2020 opens.

So far, the Dubai Metro has brought about positive change in the daily life of the Emiratis, as it has been described as a ‘life-changing project’. By reducing the number of harmful emissions and decongesting road traffic, to enhancing employment opportunities and elevating the status of the city, Dubai Metro has only had economic, social and environmental benefits.
