Professional footballcomes one step closer to Miami

Professional football (soccer, not American football) just came one step closer in Miami, with the approval of new construction at the interim Lockhart Stadium for Inter Miami FC, the city’s new MLS (Major League Soccer).

Inter Miami FC is one of two new MLS teams joining the North American soccer league next year, along with Nashville SC in Nashville, Tennessee.

With approval by 60% of voters last November in a referendum, Inter Miami FC, led by chairman David Beckham, will construct a brand new stadium and festival grounds at Miami Freedom Park.

The new grounds, on a golf course next to Miami International Airport, will be five miles from Downtown Miami and include a hotel, shopping, restaurants and a massive public park.

As Miami Freedom Park won’t be finished until 2022, Inter Miami FC needs home for the next two seasons (2020 and 2021).

Lockhart Stadium, in neighbourhood Fort Lauderdale, will serve this purpose, before being used as a training ground for the new team, as well as the home for a new USL (US Soccer League, a lower division) team for Miami.

Lockhart Stadium has historically been the centre for football in South Florida, hosting several teams before falling into disrepair in the last several years.

In addition to a new, 18,000 seat temporary stadium, the grounds at Fort Lauderdale will include a state-of-the-art training complex, public fields and a community centre.
