London unveils new design fornext fleet of Underground trains

Travelers around London could soon be seeing some relief from hot and stuffy London Underground trains. Siemens Mobility has received a contract from Transport for London to build the next generation of subway trains.

The new trains are called the ‘Inspiro London’ class. Siemens Inspiro class trains are currently used in Warsaw, Munich, Riyadh, and Kuala Lumpur.

They will start running on the Piccadilly Line in 2024. Eventually, the new trains will run on other deep-tube lines (Central, Bakerloo, Waterloo & City).

94 trains have been ordered to completely replace the 1970s fleet on the Piccadilly Line and others. This is the oldest fleet of trains in London. The sub-surface lines (District, Circle, Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City) have the newest trains, the S7 and S8 Bombardier Movia trains.

The new trains will be similar to those newer Bombardier trains. Probably the best new improvement will be the addition of air conditioning. The London Underground is notorious for the very hot conditions that can occur during peak hours in the summer.

More capacity will be added to the trains, including making the trains walkthrough from end-to-end; the estimated capacity for the Piccadilly Line is up to 60 per cent (21,000 more people per hour).

The new trains are being built in conjunction with new signals and potentially platform screen doors on the deep tube lines, similar to the Jubilee Line, which may lead to driverless trains in the future. In addition, the London Underground is working to bring step-free access to these lines.

The Piccadilly Line is London’s second-longest Underground line and the fourth busiest. It runs 24 hours a day and reaches the London borough of Barnett in the northeast, Uxbridge in the northwest, and London Heathrow in the west, all connected through central London.

London’s expansive and world-class metro system is an inspiration to many cities around the world, and part of the reason why so many live, work and invest in the British capital.
