The design of a new pedestrian and cycling bridge linking Nine Elms to Pimlico across the River Thames was unveiled a few years ago. Now, the location of where specifically the bridge will connect the London boroughs of Westminster and Wandsworth is being decided.
The new Nine Elms Pimlico Bridge was proposed by Wandsworth to connect the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area to central London by a new non-vehicle bridge.
The new bridge has been designed by Dutch designers Bystrup Architecture and London-based architects Robin Snell and Partners. The proposed design was one of the most elegant designs in the competition, according to The Guardian.
While details are still being finalized, the new bridge will be a simple and yet very classy cable-stayed bridge, with curving ramps to ensure the accessibility of cyclists and those who use wheelchairs. By being simple and minimalist, it will fit in no matter where they place the bridge.
While area residents can walk or cycle to the Vauxhall or Chelsea bridges, it can be far and also both bridges are noisy and polluted from the thousands of cars and buses that cross the river at those points. In fact, this area is “bridge-deficient” compared to other areas of central London.
The new bridge will allow established residents in Pimlico to visit the shopping areas and amazing restaurants in Nine Elms and at Battersea Power Station, as well as access to the future Northern line stations. Meanwhile, existing and future tenants of the regeneration zone south of the river will have an easier walking or cycling commute into central London, as well as access to several quiet and secluded parks in Pimlico.
While there are three different landing points proposed on either side of the river, all will be fairly close to the central part of the regeneration area, between the eastern edge of the Battersea Power Station site (close to Phase 7 buildings) and the new US Embassy.
When the new Nine Elms Pimlico bridge is finally opened, it will become another icon in an area that is being sculpted by some of the world’s best architects and designers.
