London’s West End is just as, if not more, famous than New York City’s Broadway when it comes to theatre, musicals and the performing arts. Now, Soho Place will bring innovative practices to the city.

Nimax Theatres has announced construction of the brand new theatre, the seventh in their brand. It will also be the first, brand-new purpose built theatre in Soho in 50 years.

The new theatre is currently being built on the site of the old Astoria Theatre, which was knocked down to build the new Tottenham Court Crossrail Station, which will be located below.

Soho Place will seat 600 people in the audience, up from the original 300 proposed in 2011. It will also join London as the third ‘in-the-round’ theatre, a rare theatre configuration where the audience is placed all around the stage, as opposed to in front.

The new configuration is expected to allow more innovative and immersive theatre experiences than just the traditional shows.

Soho Place will have 40,000 sq. ft of theatre space. There is expected to be some retail development, considering its location along Oxford Street, and there will be three floors of office space on top.

Nimax Theatres is currently owns the Apollo, Duchess, Garrick, Lyric, Palace and Vaudeville Theatre. One of the most popular shows running in the Nimax Brand has to be Harry Potter and Cursed Child, which has been running at the Palace Theatre since 2016.
