Why Downtown Dubai continues to be the heart of the city

Downtown Dubai, built from the ground up in less than a decade, has everything that a traditional city centre has and more. Designed to amaze tourists and provide everyday services and amenities to residents of Dubai, master developer Emaar has managed to create the magical hustle and bustle that many downtown development projects around the world have failed to achieve. Here are some of those elements that serve residents, investors, and tourists.

Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is Downtown Dubai’s centrepiece. More than a mixed-use skyscraper, the world’s tallest building features the world’s highest restaurant and lounge AT.mosphere and is a recognizable landmark for not just the city but the entire United Arab Emirates. It also features two of the world’s highest observation decks. The one on the 148th floor is so high that on a clear day, one can see across the Arabian Gulf to the rugged coastline of Iran.

Dubai Fountain

The Dubai Fountain is probably possibly one of the more spectacular pieces of Downtown Dubai. Built at the base of the Burj Khalifa in an artificial lake, there are majestic fountain displays, illuminated by LED lights and projectors and choreographed to classical and contemporary music. The experience has been enhanced recently with two new ways to get closer to the action: a traditional ‘abra’ boat ride and a floating boardwalk.

Dubai Mall

You can find everything at the world’s second-largest mall. The Dubai Mall has over 1,000 stores, restaurants, and attractions. Welcoming 92 million people in 2015, the mall also has 22 cinema screens and a 250-bed hotel. Attractions include an aquarium, haunted house, VR park, and the massive Dubai Dino, a real fossil of a 24m long-necked Diplodocus. The mall is linked to the nearby Dubai Metro station via an 820m air-conditioned pedestrian bridge.

Dubai Opera

The Dubai Opera opened two years ago, adding a multi-purpose performance hall to Downtown Dubai. Designed by architect Janus Rostock from Atkins, the building was designed to look like a ‘dhow’, a traditional boat that can still be seen in and around the waterways of Dubai. The opera house is located in a district of Downtown Dubai that includes several art galleries, museums, and design studios.

With these amazing attractions and amenities, Downtown Dubai has managed to create a thriving city center from scratch, delighting long-time and newer residents. It has also yielded a massive return on investment from those early investors.
