How to enjoy London during the winter holidays

The Christmas holidays are coming next week and all of London is abuzz. London is probably one of the best places to spend Christmas, as the city glows on every street corner and every road is bustling with shoppers and visitors. Here are four ideas to make you fall in love in London the following two weeks.

The Royal Ballet’s the Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House

Running until January 15, The Nutcracker is a Christmas classic, and it’s always a treat to see it wherever you are in the world around the holiday season.

The Royal Opera House recently opened its newly renovated wing, including a new restaurant and performance space, so a visit to watch Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet is a special occasion.

Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park

Hyde Park, one of London’s biggest parks, is transformed into an icy paradise every winter. Running until January 6, Winter Wonderland has activities for the whole family.

You can skate on the UK’s largest outdoor ice skating rink, gaze at magnificent ice sculptures, watch an amazing ice skating show and browse the wares and food at two giant Christmas markets.

Take a walk on Christmas day

Christmas Day in London can be considered unusual compared to other major tourist destinations. For one thing, no public transport runs. Secondly, almost the entire city is shut down.

You may think there’s nothing to do, but this day is one of the best if you want to go for a quiet stroll. The busiest parks will be empty and streets and landmarks that are impossible to walk along and appreciate will be considerably quiet.

Shop at a Christmas market

London is already a shopping mecca and in December, the options become a lot more festival with Christmas markets all over the city. There’s a traditional German market at Hyde Park, a traditional market by the river in South Bank, a smaller take in Leicester Square, and an indoor experience at Greenwich Christmas Market.

If you want to travel further away from the crowds, take in Swedish and holiday treats in picturesque Kingston-upon-Thames.

London is a magical experience all year round so it’s no wonder that no matter how markets go, the living in London experience is valued and prized.
