New royal wharf pier starts construction

The pier will be a combination of a traditional British seaside pier and a working dock for the Transport for London Thames Clipper service, connecting west, central and east London along the iconic British river.

At 130 metres, Royal Wharf Pier will be the longest of the piers in London, though it won’t cut straight out to the water, but will bend partway. The bent area will create a new triangular viewing platform for visitors.

The new Thames Clipper service will provide a new non-road and non-rail option for commuters in the area, bypassing crowded and congested services on other TfL services, especially in light of the uncertain delay to the Elizabeth Line’s opening.

Royal Wharf pier is designed by Nex—, who has also designed the new Royal Air Force Museum in north London. It’s also being funded by Ballymore, which is developing new projects near the pier as well as in Nine Elms and near Battersea Power Station.
